Donna Payton is a mixed media artist employing and combining a variety of techniques and materials. For “Floating Rock", she photographed parts of a demolished building and had it printed upside down on wood. This panel became a found object, a grabbed image with which she could collage and build. From her stores of many discarded objects, she arranges things until a composition conveys her vision. The rusted metal strip fit above the panel and was similar in color and texture, the silver metal disks added a visual intrigue, and the curving of the ceramic and wooden beads reiterated the curving rebar in the photo. This low relief piece combines sculpture and photography, creating a restructured version of the 2D picture plane merging with 3D sculptural forms.
